Hilary is a qualified teacher and early learning and childcare professional who has worked in a variety of roles in Glasgow, Scotland for 35 years.

Her most recent role prior to retirement was as manager of an outdoor kindergarten in Glasgow based on the Scandinavian model.

Hilary has been an inspector with the Care Commission (now the Care Inspectorate) and whilst there she was seconded to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education (Education Scotland) as an Associate Assessor. This involved Hilary in travelling extensively in Scotland inspecting nurseries and the early stages of primary school.

In 2015 Hilary completed the Froebel in Early Childhood Practice qualification at Edinburgh University. Froebel’s philosophy and ideas have a real resonance with Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence. Hilary has a passion for play in the early years, interactive and personalised learning and the importance of the outdoor environment where children are able to take risks as part of the rich learning experiences that the natural world can provide.

Hilary has designed and delivered courses in nature kindergarten pedagogy and the importance of Risky Play in the early years.

Hilary currently works with the Early Years Hub to conduct Inspection Audits for early years settings in keeping with the Scottish Care Inspectorate framework and relevant national curriculums and initiatives.
