Course aims and objectives:

  • To understand the importance of observation, assessment and planning in providing challenges to children’s mathematical learning
  • To know how to create an environment that provides the opportunities to extend children’s mathematical understanding, developing problem solving and reasoning skills
  • To understand the importance of the role of the adult in supporting and challenging children’s mathematical thinking in play
  • To plan a challenging mathematical activity for the children in your setting

Length of course: 2.5 hours.

Target audience: Teachers, teaching assistants, early years practitioners including childminders.  

This course supports the Learning and development area within the Early Years Foundation Stage (2017). Its focus for Ofsted inspection sits within the teaching, learning and assessment judgment area of the Common Inspection Framework (2015).
